The Zwinger

Der Zwinger in Dresden

A masterpiece of the european architecture in late baroque peridoe. It's the most famouse monument in Dresden.
It was build of saxon sandstone under the administration of Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann 1710 – 1728.
The name "kennel" marked the place between two ramparts. The general situation is clear and symmetric, a rectangular court which long sides both have a pavilion. Between this both pavilions, the court dilates arched and is bordered by the gallerys. It includes more pavilions like the "Wallpavillon" and the "Glockenspielpavillon".
The "Nymphenbad" is located behind the french pavilion. It has precious trick fountains. Until 1714 the direct "Langgalerien" and the crowngate at the old fortresswalls were build. The crowngate shows a overabundant structured triumphal arch. Over his cupper covered tower, four polish eagles carry the polish crown of the king.
The sculpture of the kennel is made of common scultpors of Dresden under the administration of the famous Baltasar Permoser.
The building work was finished in 1728. Since then the kennel was used for museum. Situated in the mathematic  pysical pavilion are watches, concave mirrors, telescopes and other technical equipment. Valueable chinese and meißner porcelain is exposed in the "Langgalerie" and in the porcelain pavilion since 1962.
The architectural closure of the kennel formed by the art gallery, "Old Masters", which was constructed between 1847 - 1854 by the architect Gottfried Semper in the neo-renaissance style. It accomodates one of the most beautiful collection of pictures in the world. Famous pictures like the Sistine Madonna by Raffael, the "Zinsgroschen" by Tizian, the "Schlummernde Venus" by Giorgione, pictures by Dürer, Rembrandt, Rubens; Van Dyck, Canaletto and more big masters.

A visit is  worthwhile.
