The opera was the second building of an opera by Gottfried Semper on the "Theaterplace".
The first opera he build between 1838 – 1841, burnt down in 1869. Inside Richard Wagner has celebrate his first triumphs as a composer. The second opera house was build by his son according to the plans of his father in 1871 – 1878. The configuration lean on the extravagant high renaissance. A clear arrangement, advisabillity and monumental effects are in the foreground. The overhanging centerpiece with the big niche crests a bronze Pantherquadriga with Dionysos and Ariadne. In the niches of the face statues of the big drama poets are standing. In the second opera house the art of opera experienced a new high period. At february the 13.th 1945 the opera house burnt down completely. 40 years later, right on the day, the opera house was reopened in original conditions. The auditorium and the fly tower were updated. During the rebuilding the exterior design, the stairways and the lounges achieved their former look.
